Formed in Los Angeles in 1985, Mephisto Walz have become legendary for their contributions to deathrock. Throughout their career they have graced the world with some of the most dreamy darkness and uneasy atmospherics out there.
The first thing to note about the band's latest album "New Apostles" is that at times, it has a much harder edge to it. By that I mean at points their sound is much less obscure sounding, less dreamy and more full on. Though this is intertwined with passages of their classic wailing guitars, winding through a smokey atmosphere of purple translucency.
The album makes use of two excellent voices, both perfect for the music. The male vocal has an impressive soaring quality, while the female voice possesses a beautiful obscurity. This is combined with extremely moody basslines, strong drumming and an array of weeping guitars. This succeeds in creating something so soul penetratingly dark.
With this album Mephisto Walz have created something that stands outside of time. It could be from the eighties, but it's now. Many bands lose their touch, they deviate too far from what made them special to their listeners. Here that's not the case - while we've been exposed to many more facets of this band, at the same time they've kept that touch that makes them special. 8/10
