Review: Inkubus Sukkubus - Queen of Heaven, Queen of Hell

Since forming in 1989, goth-rockers Inkubus Sukkubus have been one of the most prolific bands in the genre. Their latest in a long line of offerings is "Queen of Heaven, Queen of Hell".

Inkubus Sukkubus is one of those bands that has a very distinctive sound. In this band's case it's achieved through a blend of hard rock, gothic rock at times almost sounding like gothic metal. Being a pagan themed band their music often has a magical, mystical and ancient feel about it.

They have received criticism in the past for always sounding the same, I'll admit you always know what you're going to get from them. However, they don't sound like anyone else and they're extremely good at what they do, so I don't have a problem. It's not like there's a million other bands pumping out albums that will sound the same, which is why I always look forward to a release from this group.

"Queen of Heaven, Queen of Hell" retains the classic Inkubus Sukkubus sound, overall it is more or less what I was expecting. A small difference with this album is that some of the songs have a slower pace and more melodic feel, making use of acoustic guitars and pleasant piano melodies. They're very relaxing and enjoyable to listen to.

An improvement from previous records is the synth string sounds. In the past they have sounded rather plastic. On this album they have a much more natural sound and they're mixed better. It really makes a difference.

Another prominent feature on certain songs is the guitar work, particularly solo guitar. It sounds better than what most metal bands are putting out these days. It isn't the kind of over the top showing off guitar work, it fits in nicely adding an interesting dynamic to the music.

Overall this album is full of solid songwriting, retaining the original pagan/gothic sound that Inkubus Sukkubus have become legendary for. Credit to the band for still coming up with regular good quality releases after so many years. 8.5/10
