From the darkest depths of Sheffield shines an ethereal glow, enchanting the atmosphere all around. I have traced the source to Dyonisis, an extremely talented four piece consisting of Nel Cave (vocals), Louisa Welsby (vocals/piano), Tom Chaffer (guitars/programming) and Marcus Cave (bass).
They say their influence is alcohol, if that's true then I want to know what the hell they are drinking so I can get some too.
I have seen them labelled as various different genres. They don't really fit into any of them. The operatics of Tarja meet the laid back introspective of shoegaze, becoming immersed in the ethereal soundscape of the Cocteau Twins, backed by the guitars and powerful drumming of goth rock.
"Intoxicated" is their second full length album, though they've reached a level of mastery far beyond this.
The harmony of the two vocalists is purely captivating. The way they intertwine and spiral around each other is otherworldly, luxurious, like flowing silk. At the same time they are cutting, the heavy guitars emphasise their emotion further creating something very powerful. Yet, it's all very laid back and chilled at the same time. And then it's catchy too.
The best song on the album is "Smart Mouth", the heaviest song on the album, and the one on which all of the above element shine together at their best.
From my experience it's that which can't be categorised which is the best (and causes the most arguments), and this is truly no exception.
This is music of the highest order, an album that has truly blown me away. It's like experiencing another universe. You know that moment when you hear something, and you sit back, think and your entire existence has a new meaning, that's what just happened to me.
It's difficult to find reason to give it any lower than a 10, so this is a first...
10/10
